UK Lawmaker Urges Foreign Secretary to Support Morocco's Autonomy Plan
Liam Fox, a British Member of Parliament, is calling on Foreign Secretary David Cameron to adopt a more supportive stance on Morocco's autonomy initiative for the Moroccan Sahara, citing its significance for both UK diplomatic and business interests.
In a letter addressed to Cameron, the Conservative MP argues that endorsing the autonomy plan would align the UK with key allies such as the US, France, and Spain, while also unlocking economic opportunities in light of Morocco's rapid development and continental ambitions.
Having personally witnessed Morocco's remarkable infrastructure projects, expansion of social services, and robust economic growth, Fox emphasizes that the autonomy initiative presents the most pragmatic solution to the longstanding dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Fox invites Cameron to visit Morocco and the southern provinces to gain a deeper insight into how the autonomy plan can contribute to greater stability and prosperity.
Highlighting Morocco's indispensable role as a strategic partner on issues of mutual interest, such as security, trade, and diplomacy, Fox maintains that strengthening ties with this key North African nation should be a priority in UK foreign policy.
In the face of increasing global instability, Fox emphasizes the need for closer cooperation between the UK and Morocco, rooted in shared values, to uphold regional peace and advance common goals in Africa and beyond. With significant potential rewards at stake on multiple fronts, Fox implores Cameron to break with the ineffective status quo and firmly support Morocco's autonomy plan.
