In a significant development in Canadian criminal justice, two men have admitted to their involvement in the second-degree murder of Ripudaman Singh Malik, a Sikh businessman previously acquitted of charges related to the infamous 1985 Air India bombing. Tanner Fox and Jose Lopez entered their guilty pleas on Monday in the British Columbia Supreme Court, marking a pivotal moment in a case that has drawn renewed attention amid escalating tensions between Canada and India.
Malik, who was 75 at the time of his death, was shot multiple times while seated in his vehicle outside his business in Surrey, British Columbia, on July 14, 2022. His murder has been linked to broader geopolitical issues involving Sikh separatism and alleged Indian government interference in Canada. The two men were initially charged with first-degree murder but have now pleaded guilty to the lesser charge. They are scheduled for sentencing on October 31.
The Air India bombing remains one of Canada’s deadliest terrorist incidents, resulting in the deaths of 331 people when Flight 182 was brought down over the Atlantic Ocean. On that same day, another bomb exploded at a Tokyo airport, believed to be targeting a different Air India flight. The bombings were attributed to Sikh separatists seeking retribution for the Indian Army's violent assault on the Golden Temple in 1984.
Malik’s family expressed mixed emotions regarding the guilty pleas, acknowledging their relief that justice is being served while emphasizing that their quest for accountability is not yet complete. They urged Fox and Lopez to cooperate with law enforcement to identify those who orchestrated Malik's assassination. In their statement, they asserted, "Until those responsible for hiring them and directing this assassination are brought to justice, the work remains unfinished."
The case has gained further complexity with allegations that Indian government agents may have been involved in Malik's killing. Recent investigations have suggested connections between Malik's murder and broader efforts by Indian authorities to target Sikh activists abroad.
