Uganda signs agreement with the United States to host migrants

The Ugandan government announced on Thursday that it has reached an agreement with the United States to host “third-country nationals who may not be granted asylum in the U.S.,” marking a new step in Washington’s broader strategy of relocating migrants to partner nations.

According to a statement by Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the arrangement was presented as part of bilateral cooperation between Kampala and Washington. “A cooperation agreement for the processing of protection requests has been concluded,” said Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagiire. Uganda, which already hosts one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, has previously collaborated with international partners on resettlement and humanitarian programs. The move underscores Washington’s continued search for agreements with allied countries to manage migration flows beyond its borders.
