U.S. Agencies Defy Musk’s Directive Amid Tensions Over Federal Staff Cuts
In recent developments, U.S. government agencies, including the Pentagon and the FBI, have resisted a directive issued by Elon Musk at the request of Donald Trump. Musk, tasked with cutting public spending, ordered federal employees to justify their activities by responding to an email detailing their recent work. However, officials from key agencies, including the Department of Defense, FBI, and the State Department, have advised their teams to disregard the email. This defiance raises questions about Musk’s influence within the federal administration.
The email, sent by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), required federal workers to list five tasks completed in the past week, copying their supervisors. It emphasized the need to exclude confidential information. Musk had warned that failure to respond would be considered a resignation. However, many agencies, including the Pentagon, have suspended responses, with Pentagon official Darin Selnick stating that the department handles its own personnel evaluations according to internal procedures.
This directive comes amidst a broader context of significant personnel cuts in the federal government, driven by Musk’s influence. Thousands of federal employees have been dismissed or encouraged to resign in exchange for continued pay until September. The Department of Defense is set to reduce its workforce by at least 5% in the coming week.
Musk’s management style, often criticized for its harshness, has drawn attention. Republican Senator John Curtis, while acknowledging the need for cost-cutting, called for a more compassionate approach, emphasizing the real lives affected by such actions. As federal workers continue to navigate this uncertain environment, unions, such as the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), have vowed to contest any unlawful terminations.
Despite the backlash, Musk defended his stance, claiming that many federal workers perform minimal tasks, with some allegedly receiving pay for non-existent or deceased identities. His unsubstantiated claims of fraud remain controversial, further adding to the ongoing debate about government spending and efficiency.
