Trump’s envoy claims Putin seeks a "sustainable peace" in Ukraine
Steve Witkoff, the U.S. envoy for President Donald Trump, stated on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin desires a "sustainable peace" in Ukraine. His comments came three days after another meeting with Putin.
In an interview with conservative Fox News, Witkoff added, "We might be on the verge of securing something very, very important for the world." Trump aims to end the war in Ukraine, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives over the past three years, and he has broken the diplomatic isolation that Western nations imposed on the Russian leader.
The Trump administration has been facilitating separate talks with senior Russian and Ukrainian officials, although these negotiations have yet to lead to a comprehensive cessation of hostilities. Diplomatic efforts continue, but Moscow has not made any significant concessions. Kiev and some Western capitals accuse Russia, whose military is larger and better equipped on the front lines, of intentionally dragging out the discussions.
Witkoff met with Putin in Saint Petersburg on Friday for the third time since Trump’s return to the White House in January. The meeting, which lasted over four hours and included two of Putin's closest advisors, Yuri Ushakov and Kirill Dmitriev, was described as "convincing." Witkoff indicated that a peace agreement is "emerging."
Furthermore, Trump’s representative hinted that "business opportunities" between the U.S. and Russia were part of the talks and could help "bring real stability to the region."
