Trump Nears Nuclear Deal With Iran Amid Tense Negotiations
DUBAI, May 15— U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Washington is on the verge of finalizing a nuclear agreement with Iran, suggesting that Tehran has "sort of" accepted the proposed terms.
Speaking during a visit to the Gulf region, Trump emphasized the seriousness of ongoing negotiations, describing them as aimed at achieving "long-term peace," according to a pool report shared by AFP.
Recent discussions between American and Iranian delegates concluded in Oman on Sunday, with further diplomatic rounds scheduled. While both sides have reiterated their preference for resolving the long-standing nuclear impasse through diplomacy, significant disagreements remain. Key issues continue to divide the two nations, especially concerning uranium enrichment and regional security, making the path to a final agreement uncertain.
In response to Trump’s earlier remarks labeling Iran as the “most destructive force” in the Middle East, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the U.S. stance. He accused Washington of causing regional instability while using rhetoric about human rights to mask its actions.
"Trump believes he can impose sanctions and threats while lecturing on human rights. The real source of conflict and unrest in the region is the United States," Pezeshkian said. He stressed that Iran seeks peace, opposing what he described as the U.S.’s aggressive approach.
He also criticized Trump's efforts to divide Muslim countries by favoring Saudi Arabia over Iran. "Saudi Arabia is a Muslim nation. How could we be against them? Trump wants to isolate Iran by pitting Islamic nations against each other and destabilizing our country," he said.
