Trump escalates criticism of Ilhan Omar after failed censure vote in congress

President Donald Trump launched a renewed attack on Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and her country of birth, Somalia, after the House of Representatives narrowly rejected an effort to censure her and strip her of committee roles.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump dismissed Omar as “awful” and argued she should face impeachment, questioning her credibility to guide Americans on national governance given her Somali origins.

The criticism followed a failed resolution introduced by Republican Representative Nancy Mace. The measure, designed to formally censure Omar, fell by a margin of 214 to 213, with four Republicans siding with Democrats to block the move. The resolution stemmed from Omar’s social media activity, including her retweet of a post from conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

Trump later intensified his remarks on Truth Social, depicting Somalia as a nation beset by chronic instability, corruption, terrorism, piracy, and widespread poverty. He claimed that more than seventy percent of the Somali population lives in extreme poverty, characterizing the country as one of the world’s most corrupt. He also revisited allegations regarding Omar’s citizenship and personal history, none of which have been substantiated.

In her response, Omar thanked members of Congress who opposed what she described as the spreading of falsehoods on the House floor. She stressed the importance of protecting First Amendment rights and underscored the value of reasoned debate within the legislature. Omar has consistently rejected Trump’s allegations, calling instead for a commitment to truthful and constructive political discourse.
