Trailblazing the Heights: Nadia Fettah Alaoui's Extraordinary Ascent as Morocco's First Female Minister of Economy and Finance
Nadia Fettah Alaoui's remarkable journey from private equity to the pinnacle of Moroccan politics has secured her a coveted spot on Forbes' prestigious "50 Over 50" list for the Middle East and North Africa.
As the daughter of a prominent Moroccan official, Fettah Alaoui received her education in Morocco before furthering her studies at the renowned HEC Paris business school. Commencing her career at an auditing firm and investment fund in Casablanca during the 1990s, her trajectory took a significant turn when insurance tycoon Moulay Hafid Elalamy recruited her.
While serving as CEO of finance at Elalamy's company Saham, Fettah Alaoui played a pivotal role in the ambitious expansion of the company across Africa through strategic mergers and acquisitions. Under her leadership, Saham evolved into a continental insurance giant with a workforce exceeding 3,000 employees. Subsequently, she orchestrated the lucrative sale of Saham to the South African firm Sanlam for an impressive sum exceeding $1 billion.
Fettah Alaoui's outstanding business acumen garnered her appointments to Sanlam's executive team and the chairmanship of Saham Assurances Morocco. Her achievements were further recognized when she was awarded CEO of the Year at the 2018 Africa CEO Forum before transitioning into the realm of politics.
Following a successful term as Minister of Tourism, Fettah Alaoui made history once again in 2021 by assuming the role of Morocco's first female Minister of Economy and Finance.
