Tourism in Morocco Surges with 3.3 Million Arrivals in the first Quarter of 2024
Tourism arrivals in Morocco surged to 3.3 million individuals by the end of the first quarter of 2024, marking a remarkable 12.8% increase compared to the same period a year prior, as reported by the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF).
"For the beginning of 2024, the key indicators of the tourism sector, including arrivals and overnight stays, continue their upward trajectory. Indeed, the influx of arrivals to the 'Morocco' destination bolstered by impressive performances in March, February, and January 2024 (with respective increases of 10.2%, 17.9%, and 10.4%)," stated the DEPF in its recent economic outlook.
Breaking down the figures by segment, this growth is attributed to a 15.4% increase in the number of arrivals of foreign tourists and a 9.8% rise in arrivals of Moroccans residing abroad (MRE), as detailed by the same source.
Compared to the first quarter of 2019, arrivals in Morocco have surged by 31.6%, according to the DEPF.
Regarding the value added by the tourism sector, it has nearly reclaimed its pre-crisis level (benchmark year 2019), standing at 98.3% on average, after a previous year's figure of 80.5%.
Furthermore, the DEPF indicates that the volume of overnight stays in classified accommodation establishments increased by 7.3% on an annual basis by the end of the first two months of 2024, driven by an 11% growth in stays by non-residents, offset by a 1% decrease in stays by residents.
Compared to the end of February 2019, these overnight stays have strengthened by 11.1%, following an increase of 10.7% at the end of January 2024 and 3.6% at the end of February 2023.
Regarding tourist revenues, they declined by 6.7% on an annual basis by the end of February 2024, following a 10.5% decline the previous month. However, compared to pre-crisis levels, these revenues remain significantly higher (+40.4%)
