Death toll from Southern Thailand floods rises to 162
The death toll from the massive floods sweeping through southern Thailand has risen to 162, as authorities continue rescue and relief operations across the hardest-hit regions. Local media reported that more than one million households have been affected by the disaster, considered the worst flooding the area has seen in a quarter of a century.
Government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed that Songkhla province alone has recorded 126 fatalities. Other southern provinces have also suffered losses, including Nakhon Si Thammarat with nine deaths, Phatthalung with four, Trang with two, Satun with five, Pattani with seven, Yala with five, and Narathiwat with four.
The floods have trapped thousands in their homes, prompting large-scale emergency deployments. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has pledged financial support for families of the victims and has declared a state of emergency in Songkhla. The Royal Thai Armed Forces’ supreme commander has been assigned to oversee nationwide response efforts.
Teerapat Kachamat, who heads the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said that 105 districts across nine provinces are currently facing severe flooding, affecting more than 2.9 million people.
Rescue teams are working to evacuate residents, distribute essential supplies, and operate mobile kitchens, water purification systems, and rescue boats as the situation continues to evolve.
