Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Dams: A Testament to Resilient Water Management with 1.1 Billion Cubic Meters Capacity

Morocco's water management efforts have recently achieved a significant milestone, as announced by the General Directorate of Water under the Ministry of Equipment and Water. The reservoirs of major dams in the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region now hold an impressive capacity of approximately 1.1 billion cubic meters, showcasing the region's dedication to ensuring a sustainable water supply for its communities.

According to the Directorate's report, the total capacity of these dams stands at a remarkable 1.721 billion cubic meters, with the current water reserves reaching 1,099.1 million cubic meters – indicating a filling rate of 63.84%. This figure represents a notable increase from the same period last year, when the reservoirs held approximately 978.3 million cubic meters, reflecting a filling rate of 56.82%.

The resilience of the region's water infrastructure is further exemplified by the achievement of full capacity in three dams – Acharif Al Idrissi (121.65 million cubic meters), Nakhla in Tetouan province (4.21 million cubic meters), and Chefchaouen (12.24 million cubic meters).

In the Loukkos area, the Oued El Makhazine dam, the largest reservoir in Larache province, holds an impressive 641.49 million cubic meters of water, with a filling rate of 95.34%. Meanwhile, the Dar Khrofa dam has accumulated 141.21 million cubic meters, representing a filling rate of 29.4%.

The report also provides insights into the water reserves of other key dams in the region. The 9 April dam in the Tanger-Assilah prefecture holds 78.21 million cubic meters (26.07% filling rate), while the Ibn Battouta dam has reached a filling rate of 92.7%, with 27 million cubic meters of water.

In the Fahs-Anjra province, the Moulay El Hassan Ben El Mahdi dam stands at a respectable 67.29% filling rate, with 15.76 million cubic meters of water. The Tanger Méditerranée dam in the same province boasts an 82.66% filling rate, with 18.2 million cubic meters of water reserves.

Further south, in the Al Hoceima province, the Abdelkrim Al Khattabi dam has achieved a filling rate of 23.36%, holding 2.75 million cubic meters of water.

In the M'diq-Fnideq prefecture, the Smir dam has recorded an impressive 91.31% filling rate, with 35.57 million cubic meters of water, while the Jomoua dam stands at a 15.82% filling rate, with 0.82 million cubic meters of water reserves.

This remarkable achievement in water management reflects the region's commitment to ensuring a sustainable water supply for its communities, mitigating the challenges posed by climate change and drought. As Morocco continues to prioritize water security, the resilient reservoirs of the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region serve as a beacon of hope for a water-secure future.
