The European Union has paved the way for easing sanctions against Syria following the fall of the former regime. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced on Monday that ministers have agreed on a roadmap to gradually lift restrictions.

The EU currently imposes a wide range of sanctions on Syria, including bans on oil exports and restrictions on financial transactions. These measures were implemented to pressure the previous regime. However, with a new government in power, the EU is now exploring ways to support Syria's recovery while ensuring accountability and respect for human rights.

Kallas emphasized that the approach will be cautious and reversible. The lifting of sanctions will be closely linked to measurable progress in governance and human rights within Syria.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani welcomed the EU's decision, expressing hope that it will contribute to the well-being of the Syrian people and foster sustainable development.

Before the final decision can be implemented, technical teams will work out the details of suspending sanctions in crucial sectors such as energy and transportation to facilitate reconstruction efforts.

This roadmap signifies a significant shift in the EU's Syria policy, reflecting a strategic interest in stabilizing the region while maintaining a cautious approach to engagement with the new government.
