Spain ends mandate of its ambassador to Israel amid diplomatic tensions
The Spanish government has officially ended the mandate of its ambassador to Israel, marking a new stage in the strained diplomatic relationship between the two countries. The decision was formalized through a royal decree published in Spain’s official state bulletin.
The diplomat, Ana María Sálomon Pérez, had already been recalled to Madrid in September 2025 following escalating tensions between Madrid and the Israeli government. Since then, Spain has been without a permanent ambassador in Tel Aviv.
The Spanish administration, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has been among the most critical voices in Europe regarding Israel’s military actions in Gaza following the October 2023 attack carried out by Hamas. Spanish leaders have repeatedly called for stronger international measures to protect civilians and reduce violence in the region.
According to the royal decree signed by Felipe VI, the ambassador’s duties were formally terminated while thanking her for her service. If Spain decides to restore full diplomatic representation in Israel, the government will need to appoint a new ambassador who would then present credentials to Israeli authorities.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries have been under pressure for months. Israel also withdrew its ambassador from Spain after Madrid recognized the State of Palestine in 2024. The situation reflects broader tensions in Europe regarding Middle East policies and the ongoing conflict in the region.
