South Korea moves closer to securing oil supplies from Kazakhstan
South Korea is nearing an agreement to secure crude oil supplies from Kazakhstan, as part of its strategy to diversify energy sources amid ongoing instability in the Middle East.
According to the country’s industry minister, negotiations have made significant progress, with details regarding volumes and delivery timelines expected to be announced soon. The move reflects Seoul’s efforts to reduce its heavy dependence on oil imports from the Middle East, which currently account for a large share of its energy consumption.
The initiative comes at a time when geopolitical tensions have disrupted key maritime routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil shipments. These disruptions have pushed several countries to explore alternative supply channels in order to ensure energy security.
Recent diplomatic engagements between South Korea and Kazakhstan have focused on strengthening cooperation in the energy sector. Officials highlighted that, despite the geographical distance, shipping times from Kazakhstan are comparable to those from other major suppliers, making it a viable long-term partner.
In parallel, South Korea has also taken steps to secure additional supplies from other producers. Agreements reached with partners in the Gulf region aim to stabilize imports and reduce exposure to sudden market shocks.
The country’s broader strategy centers on building a more resilient energy system by diversifying supply sources and reducing reliance on any single region. Analysts say such measures are increasingly necessary in a global context marked by uncertainty and fluctuating oil prices.
