Slovenia political deadlock deepens as president urges lawmakers to nominate new prime minister
Slovenia has entered a new phase of political uncertainty after the president called on lawmakers to propose a candidate for prime minister capable of forming a governing coalition, following an inconclusive election outcome.
President Nataša Pirc Musar announced that she would not nominate a prime minister-designate, citing the absence of sufficient parliamentary support for any potential governing alliance. She emphasized that no political group had demonstrated the ability to secure a stable majority.
The recent election resulted in a narrow victory for outgoing Prime Minister Robert Golob and his liberal Freedom Movement, which won 29 seats in parliament. However, this was not enough to guarantee control of the legislature.
The opposition Slovenian Democratic Party, led by former Prime Minister Janez Janša, secured 28 seats. Despite the close result, neither bloc managed to build a coalition capable of reaching the 46-seat majority required to form a government.
Negotiations between parties have so far failed to produce an agreement. Golob recently acknowledged that his party could not secure enough parliamentary backing and would move into opposition. Meanwhile, discussions among other political groups remain ongoing, with reports suggesting informal contacts between smaller center-right parties.
Under the president’s decision, the responsibility now shifts to the national parliament, which has 14 days to propose a new candidate for prime minister. If no agreement is reached, Slovenia could face further institutional delays or renewed political negotiations.
The situation highlights growing fragmentation in Slovenian politics, where coalition-building has become increasingly complex. Analysts note that the outcome may shape the country’s political direction in the coming years, particularly regarding economic policy and relations within the European Union.
