Slovak PM Robert Fico Clings to Life After Gunshot Attack
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is fighting for his life after being shot multiple times following a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The government has announced that Fico is in critical condition, with his life hanging in the balance as he remains in surgery.
The shocking incident occurred in the town of Handlova, central Slovakia, where Fico had convened a cabinet gathering. According to eyewitness reports from a Dennik N journalist present at the scene, the Prime Minister was swiftly bundled into a car by his security detail following the attack.
The suspected assailant behind the shooting has been apprehended by Slovak authorities, as confirmed by President Zuzana Caputova. "The police have arrested the attacker and will provide further information as soon as possible," she stated, condemning the assault as "an attack against democracy."
Initial reports from the government suggest that Fico sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the incident. He was initially rushed to the Handlova hospital's vascular surgery unit, where medical professionals worked tirelessly to stabilize his condition. However, the gravity of his injuries necessitated an airlift to the city of Banska Bystrica for advanced medical care.
The brutal attack has drawn widespread condemnation from leaders across Europe and the international community. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed shock, vehemently denouncing the violence and extending his solidarity to Fico, his family, and the Slovak people.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen deplored the "heinous attack," emphasizing that such acts of violence undermine democracy, society's most cherished asset. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg echoed similar sentiments, expressing his dismay over the incident.
Closer to home, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a close ally of Fico, voiced profound shock at the "odious attack" on his friend. Orban fervently prayed for Fico's health and swift recovery.
The motivations behind the assault remain unclear, but Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliniak has labeled it a politically motivated attack, vowing appropriate action in response.
As the nation holds its breath, the focus remains on Prime Minister Fico's critical condition and the ongoing investigation into this act of violence that has shaken Slovakia's political landscape to its core.
