DAKAR - President Macky Sall of Senegal officially inaugurated the United Nations Regional Service Center on Thursday, situated in Diamniadio just outside the capital. The momentous opening ceremony marked the conclusion of a $291 million investment in a cutting-edge facility poised to streamline UN operations across Senegal and the broader West and Central Africa region.

Spanning 13 hectares, this expansive complex is designated to accommodate all 34 UN agencies currently dispersed throughout Senegal, consolidating over 2,400 employees under one unified roof. President Sall underscored the significance of this ambitious project as a testament to the nation's robust and burgeoning collaboration with the UN.

In his address to the gathered audience outside the sleek, modern buildings, President Sall expressed, "We aimed to create an optimal environment that fosters the impactful work of the United Nations agencies we host." The Center's strategic location, aligned with Sall's innovative town initiative aimed at alleviating congestion in Dakar, promises to enhance regional cooperation and operational efficiency.

Having undergone construction by a local Senegalese company, the state-of-the-art campus has reached completion after nearly four years. The impending relocation of UN staff from their current scattered offices across the capital to this purpose-built facility is anticipated to enhance the organization's effectiveness in the region, aligning with its global vision for peace, now brought closer to fruition on African soil.
