Russia and Iran discuss diplomatic measures amid US-Israel strikes
On February 28, a phone call was held at the initiative of the Iranian side between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to discuss recent developments in the Middle East and the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.
The Iranian minister outlined steps taken by Tehran to respond to military actions by United States and Israel, which he said had again disrupted ongoing negotiations for a peaceful resolution. He also announced plans to urgently convene the United Nations Security Council.
In response, Lavrov condemned what he described as an unprovoked attack by the US and Israel, violating international law and disregarding the potential consequences for regional and global stability. He stressed the need for an immediate halt to hostilities and for a return to political and diplomatic channels to resolve the crisis.
Lavrov further emphasized Russia’s readiness to support efforts, including at the UN Security Council, to find peaceful solutions based on international law, mutual respect, and a balance of interests. The call reflects ongoing cooperation between Moscow and Tehran in seeking to de-escalate tensions in the region.
