Roschdy Zem appointed jury president of the 52nd Deauville American Film Festival
French-Moroccan actor and filmmaker Roschdy Zem has been named president of the jury for the 52nd edition of the Deauville American Film Festival, set to take place in Normandy from September 4 to 13, organizers announced.
At 60 years old, Zem takes over the role from Franco-Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani, continuing a tradition of prominent figures in international cinema leading the festival’s jury.
Founded in 1975, the Deauville American Film Festival is held annually in the prestigious seaside resort of Deauville in northwestern France and is dedicated to celebrating American cinema.
Roschdy Zem is a major figure in French cinema, having appeared in more than a hundred films and television productions, while also directing six feature films. He began his career in auteur cinema in the 1990s before transitioning into more mainstream productions.
He gained wider recognition through popular films such as the comedy Chouchou (2003) and the crime thriller 36 Quai des Orfèvres (2004), which established him as a leading actor in French cinema.
A major turning point in his career came in 2006 when he was part of the ensemble cast of Indigènes (Days of Glory), a film about North African soldiers who fought for France during World War II. The performance earned him a collective Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Known for his deep voice and commanding presence, Zem has often portrayed complex characters, including police officers and emotionally layered roles in French crime dramas. Over time, his career has evolved toward more nuanced and sensitive performances.
In 2020, he won his first César Award—the French equivalent of the Oscars—for his role as a police commissioner in Roubaix, une lumière, directed by Arnaud Desplechin.
His appointment highlights his enduring influence in French and international cinema ahead of one of the country’s most prestigious film events.
