Romain Saiss sidelined after ankle surgery ahead of World Cup qualifiers
Romain Saiss, captain of Morocco’s national football team, is in recovery following surgery for a severe ankle injury sustained during training. The 34-year-old defender, now playing for Qatari club Al-Sadd SC, underwent the procedure under the care of renowned surgeon Dr. Pieter D’Hooghe.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers player shared a brief update on Instagram, writing, “Surgery done. Al Hamdolillah,” signaling optimism despite the setback.
This marks another challenging chapter in Saiss’s career, as he previously led the Atlas Lions to a historic semi-final finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. However, his run in the tournament ended prematurely after he was stretchered off during the quarterfinal match against Portugal due to a hamstring injury.
With 70 international caps to his name, Saiss remains a cornerstone of Morocco's defense, even as injuries have tested his resilience throughout his career. Notably, he dealt with significant thigh concerns during his tenure in the English Premier League with Wolves.
The timeline for his return remains uncertain, but both Al-Sadd SC and the Moroccan national team are eager for his recovery, particularly with crucial World Cup qualifiers against Niger and Tanzania fast approaching next month. Saiss’s absence will undoubtedly be felt as Morocco continues to build on its impressive football legacy.
