Pedro Almodóvar explores self-fiction in his new meta-cinematic film “Autofiction”
Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar returns to the big screen with Autofiction, a new film that continues his exploration of identity, creativity, and the blurred line between reality and imagination.
Selected for the Cannes Film Festival for the fifth time, the director presents a deeply introspective work that reflects on the creative process itself. The film follows a renowned filmmaker struggling with inspiration, who begins to construct a fictional alter ego as a way to overcome a personal and artistic crisis.
Shot between Madrid and the Canary Islands, particularly Lanzarote, the film immerses viewers in a visually rich environment typical of Almodóvar’s signature style. Through a story of mirrored identities, the director explores how personal experiences can shape artistic creation.
The cast includes several well-known figures of Spanish cinema, such as Rossy De Palma, alongside Bárbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón. Their performances contribute to a narrative where fiction and reality gradually merge.
Autofiction portrays a filmmaker who channels personal tragedy into his work, creating a character that reflects his own doubts and emotions. As the story unfolds, the boundaries between creator and creation begin to dissolve, offering a meditation on artistic identity and vulnerability.
The film is set for theatrical release during the Cannes Film Festival in May, reinforcing Almodóvar’s long-standing relationship with the prestigious event.
