Paris: Man dies in police custody, investigation launched
A man arrested in possession of cannabis resin in Paris died while in police custody, prompting authorities to open an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
The incident occurred Wednesday evening in the 20th arrondissement. Police officers from the local territorial contact brigade reportedly spotted the man rolling a cannabis joint. During his arrest, he resisted, and officers used a contact-mode Taser on his calf to subdue him.
The man fell to the ground during the confrontation, knocking over two officers. Parquet officials confirmed that an alcohol test was negative, but the man was found carrying forged administrative documents and a substance resembling cannabis.
While waiting to be transported to the hospital, the man fell from a bench in the police station. Despite immediate medical attention, he died before reaching the hospital. He had sustained a minor injury to his eyebrow during the arrest.
The National Police Inspectorate (IGPN) and a magistrate from the Paris prosecutor’s office were present for observation. The body has been transferred to the forensic institute for an autopsy, and the investigation has been assigned to the central police station in the 20th arrondissement.
