Paris: Homeless man found dead after parking garage fire
A man experiencing homelessness was found dead early Saturday morning following a fire in an underground parking garage in Paris’s 13th arrondissement, according to police and judicial sources.
Emergency services were alerted shortly before dawn after security staff at a residential building on Avenue de Choisy reported heavy smoke coming from a storage unit located on the second underground level of the parking area. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and brought the blaze under control.
During ventilation operations, rescue teams discovered the body of a man inside the affected area. Authorities later confirmed that the victim had no fixed address. No other injuries were reported.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of death and the origin of the fire, which remains unknown at this stage. Police are examining all possible scenarios, including accidental causes.
The incident occurred amid cold winter conditions in the Paris region. Although nighttime temperatures have dropped below freezing, the regional cold weather emergency plan has not yet been officially activated. Local authorities and humanitarian organizations continue to warn about the risks faced by people living on the streets during this period.
