Oil prices fall after US-Iran agreement eases Strait of Hormuz tensions
Global oil prices fell sharply on Monday after the announcement of an agreement between the United States and Iran, easing concerns over supply disruptions in one of the world’s most critical energy routes, the Strait of Hormuz.
The deal, confirmed by both Washington and Tehran and mediated by Pakistan, marks a significant step toward de-escalating tensions that had previously disrupted global energy markets. Although the full text of the agreement has not yet been published, it reportedly includes a ceasefire across multiple conflict fronts and provisions for restoring maritime stability in the region.
Market reaction was immediate, with crude benchmarks recording significant declines. Brent crude fell by more than 4%, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also dropped sharply, briefly falling below key psychological thresholds before stabilizing. Analysts attribute the movement to expectations of improved supply flows and reduced geopolitical risk premiums.
The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is considered a major factor behind the price movement. The waterway is responsible for a large share of global oil shipments, and any disruption typically has a strong impact on energy markets.
According to energy analysts, markets had already begun pricing in the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough in recent weeks, limiting further downside pressure on prices. As a result, oil benchmarks had already lost a significant portion of their value prior to the official announcement.
Experts caution, however, that stability in the region remains uncertain. The process of restoring normal shipping conditions, rebuilding inventories, and re-establishing strategic reserves is expected to take time. Any breakdown in negotiations could quickly reverse recent price declines.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has also revised its outlook, lowering its forecast for global oil demand growth in 2026. The group now expects a slower increase compared to earlier projections, reflecting broader concerns about economic conditions and energy consumption trends.
Despite the current easing in prices, analysts emphasize that oil markets remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments. The long-term trajectory will depend on the durability of the agreement and the pace at which regional stability is restored.
