North Korea fires ‘Unidentified Ballistic Missile’ toward the sea of Japan
Seoul, South Korea — North Korea fired at least one “unidentified ballistic missile” toward the Sea of Japan on Friday, the South Korean military said. The launch comes just eight days after U.S. President Donald Trump approved South Korea’s plan to build a nuclear-powered submarine.
“The North has launched an unidentified ballistic missile toward the East Sea,” said the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.
Last week, during his visit to South Korea, Trump announced via Truth Social that the future submarine would be built in Philadelphia shipyards in the United States. Analysts note that this move could mark a major strategic shift in regional naval power, as U.S. nuclear submarine technology remains one of Washington’s most closely guarded military secrets.
Unlike diesel-powered submarines, nuclear-powered vessels can remain submerged for much longer, giving them a significant operational advantage. Experts say South Korea’s entry into the small circle of nations with nuclear propulsion capabilities would represent a major milestone in its defense industry.
Pyongyang, for its part, has repeatedly stated since the failed 2019 Trump–Kim summit that it will never abandon its nuclear arsenal, calling itself an “irreversible nuclear power.”
