National Poll Reveals Tim Walz's Low Profile Ahead of Vice Presidential Pick

In a recent NPR/PBS/Marist poll, it appears Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is largely unknown to the American public. Released just before Vice President Kamala Harris announced Walz as her running mate, the survey indicated that 71% of respondents had either never heard of Walz or lacked an opinion about him. Among those familiar with him, 17% had a favorable view, while 12% viewed him negatively.

In contrast, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, another leading candidate for Harris' running mate, was also relatively unknown to many. The poll revealed that 53% of respondents had not heard of Shapiro. Of those who had an opinion, 25% viewed him favorably compared to 23% who had an unfavorable view.

As both candidates vie for visibility, Walz’s introduction to the electorate will be crucial. Where Walz is known, particularly in Minnesota, he enjoys a notable degree of popularity. According to a Morning Consult survey from July, 54% of registered Minnesota voters approved of Walz’s performance as governor, while 40% disapproved.

In comparison, Shapiro’s approval rating stood at 56% approval and 31% disapproval, according to the same survey.

On the other side of the political spectrum, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance has seen a decline in his popularity since being selected as former President Donald Trump’s running mate. The NPR/PBS/Marist poll showed that 34% of adults viewed Vance favorably, while 43% had an unfavorable opinion, resulting in a net rating of minus-9 points. This represents a drop from July’s NPR/PBS/Marist poll, which recorded a net rating of minus-3 points for Vance.

Harris’ choice of Walz comes amid a rapidly changing political landscape. Recent developments, including an assassination attempt on Trump, the Republican convention, and President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race, have significantly altered the dynamics of the presidential election. The current environment presents a more favorable situation for Democrats, although the race remains competitive according to recent polling data.
