Morocco to sanction diplomatic vehicles for traffic violations

Diplomatic vehicles in Morocco will no longer be exempt from traffic rules. The National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) has announced that vehicles with diplomatic license plates will now be strictly monitored and penalized for any infractions.

The decision was made during a meeting of the monitoring committee under the permanent commission on road safety, held on July 5, 2025, in Rabat. The session reviewed the preliminary traffic accident report for July and discussed enhanced control measures for the summer season.

The report revealed encouraging results at the national level, with a 5.2% drop in fatalities and a 3.2% decrease in total casualties. Outside urban areas, road safety indicators improved significantly, with a 9.5% reduction in accidents, a 24.8% fall in deaths, and a 16.6% drop in overall victims.

Motorcyclist deaths also declined by an impressive 32%.

However, the situation in urban areas is concerning, with accidents rising by 8.1%, fatalities by 48.9%, and total casualties by 4.2%, according to the report.

To address these concerns, the committee decided to increase oversight of diplomatic vehicles and those with foreign license plates. This is in line with a directive issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.

Additional measures include the nationwide deployment of new speedometers, speed control for motorcycles, and enforcement of helmet standards. Fixed radar systems will now also record violations committed by foreign-registered vehicles.
