Morocco invests nearly 600 million dirhams in Meknes Grand Stadium project
The Fès-Meknès Regional Council has approved a major sports infrastructure project involving the construction of the Grand Stadium of Meknes, with a total estimated cost of nearly 600 million Moroccan dirhams, as part of a broader package of regional development agreements.
The decision was taken during an extraordinary session held in Fez, where nine partnership agreements were endorsed covering multiple development initiatives across the region.
The stadium project brings together several public stakeholders, including the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports, the Fès-Meknès region, local councils, and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), which will contribute the largest share of funding.
According to the approved financial structure, the ministry will contribute 150 million dirhams, the region 100 million, the prefectural council of Meknes 10 million, the municipality of Meknes 30 million, and the Mechouar commune 10 million. The FRMF will provide 300 million dirhams, making it the main financial contributor.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has been designated as the project owner, while the National Agency for Public Facilities will act as delegated project manager. The agreement also outlines the conditions for the stadium’s future management and operation.
Local authorities say the stadium will represent a significant asset for the region, particularly as Morocco prepares for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Officials expect the Fès-Meknès region to host training camps for participating national teams, further increasing the strategic importance of the project.
Beyond sports infrastructure, the regional council also approved additional development agreements, including the modernization of a vocational training institute in construction and public works in Fez, as well as road infrastructure projects aimed at improving access to logistics zones and rural mobility.
The overall package reflects a broader regional strategy focused on improving infrastructure, strengthening economic connectivity, and supporting long-term development ahead of major international sporting events.
