Moroccan startup Woliz wins fintech prize at GITEX Africa 2026
Moroccan startup Woliz has secured the FinTech and Blockchain prize at the SUPERNOVA Challenge during GITEX Africa 2026, held from April 7 to 9 in Marrakech. The award highlights emerging companies with strong innovation, scalability, and measurable market impact across the continent’s technology ecosystem.
Woliz operates a digital platform designed to connect small neighborhood shops with brands, telecom operators, consumers, and financial institutions. The system targets “nanostores,” which dominate retail activity in many African countries. Across the continent, an estimated 12 million such stores operate, including about 220,000 in Morocco, serving as a primary access point for everyday goods.
A key challenge in this segment is the lack of digital transaction records. Most purchases remain informal, limiting access to credit and financial services for shop owners while restricting data visibility for suppliers and financial institutions. Woliz addresses this gap by offering integrated tools at the point of sale, including digital payments, inventory management, loyalty programs, and embedded financial services.
The company’s leadership states that the platform aims to make daily transactions traceable and to unlock financing opportunities for small retailers. By digitizing operations, the model seeks to improve efficiency across supply chains while enabling broader financial inclusion. The approach focuses on strengthening existing retail networks rather than replacing them.
The SUPERNOVA Challenge is widely regarded as a leading startup competition in Africa, attracting ventures from more than 100 countries. Winners often gain access to international investors and follow-on funding. The recognition places Woliz among a group of startups positioned to scale across regional markets and contribute to the expansion of Africa’s digital economy.
