Moroccan Runners Dominate Moscow Marathon, Showcasing Nation's Athletic Prowess

In a stunning display of athletic excellence, Moroccan runners swept the podium at the 2024 Moscow Marathon, solidifying their country's reputation as a powerhouse in long-distance running. Youness Bennar led the charge, crossing the finish line with an impressive time of 2:11:34, closely followed by fellow Moroccan El Mahjoub Dazza, who clocked in at 2:11:38.

The historic achievement wasn't just a victory for the individual athletes but a testament to Morocco's growing influence in the world of athletics. Russian runner Dmitriy Nedelin secured the third spot with a time of 2:11:40, rounding out the top three in this prestigious event.

Now in its 12th year, the Moscow Marathon has established itself as a significant fixture on the global running calendar. Recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the race attracts thousands of participants from around the world, drawn by its well-organized course and the opportunity to compete against top-tier athletes.

This remarkable performance by the Moroccan runners adds to a series of notable achievements on the international stage, building upon the nation's rich history in athletics, particularly in long-distance events. Morocco has long been a breeding ground for exceptional middle and long-distance runners, with legends like Hicham El Guerrouj paving the way for future generations.

El Guerrouj, often hailed as the greatest middle-distance runner of all time, still holds world records in the 1500 meters and the mile. His Olympic gold medals from 1996 and 2000 serve as inspiration for aspiring Moroccan athletes.

The country's athletic legacy also includes trailblazers like Nawal El Moutawakel, who made history as the first Moroccan woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Her triumph in the women's 400-meter hurdles at the 1984 Olympics opened doors for future generations of female athletes in Morocco and beyond.

As Bennar, Dazza, and their compatriots continue to excel on the global stage, they not only bring pride to their nation but also inspire a new generation of runners. Their success at the Moscow Marathon serves as a powerful reminder of Morocco's enduring strength in athletics and its ability to compete at the highest levels of international sport.
