Moroccan PJD Party Commends Public Support for Palestine and Lebanon Amid Regional Tensions
The Justice and Development Party (PJD) of Morocco has expressed gratitude for the widespread participation in a recent mass march condemning the Israeli Occupation Forces' (IOF) actions in Gaza and Lebanon. This demonstration of solidarity took place last Sunday, drawing thousands of Moroccans to the streets.
In a general meeting led by party leader Abdelilah Benkirane, the PJD secretariat reaffirmed its opposition to the IOF's ongoing military operations targeting civilians in both Gaza and Lebanon. The gathering provided a platform for the party to discuss various pressing issues, with a particular focus on the volatile situation in these conflict-ridden areas.
The PJD took the opportunity to extend its appreciation to citizens, activists, and supporters who joined the march against what the party described as the IOF's "genocidal campaign" in Gaza and its relentless targeting of civilians in Lebanon. Building on this momentum, the party renewed its call for Arab and Muslim nations and their leaders to fulfill their obligations in supporting the people of Gaza and those affected by the brutal conflict in Lebanon.
During the meeting, the PJD also addressed domestic concerns, highlighting what it perceives as "evident governmental shortcomings" in responding to various sectoral protests. The party pointed out the ongoing crisis in medical and pharmaceutical colleges since December, as well as demonstrations by lawyers and recent strikes by teachers opposing government policies.
On a separate note, the PJD commended King Mohammed VI's recent speech at the opening of this year's legislative session. The party praised the monarch's efforts to reinforce Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara region and to garner support for the autonomy initiative. The King's address emphasized the diplomatic progress Morocco has achieved regarding the Sahara question, highlighting the country's success in asserting its legitimate historical rights over the region.
The monarch's speech also touched upon recent developments supporting Moroccan territorial integrity, including France's historic recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces. This diplomatic victory has been well-received by various political parties, including the National Rally of Independents (RNI), which voiced its support for the King and expressed gratitude to friendly nations engaging economically and politically with Morocco's southern regions.
As Morocco continues to navigate complex regional dynamics and domestic challenges, the PJD's stance reflects the ongoing debate within the country regarding its role in regional conflicts and its pursuit of territorial integrity. The party's dual focus on international solidarity and domestic governance issues underscores the multifaceted nature of Morocco's political landscape in 2024.
