Moroccan Chemist Mohamed Eddaoudi Honored with Prestigious Kuwait Prize

Eddaoudi's research at KAUST focuses on developing and synthesizing novel functional solid-state materials, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), for a wide range of chemical applications. These innovative materials, meticulously crafted through molecular and supramolecular building block approaches, have transformed fields such as gas separations, catalysis, energy storage, and carbon capture.

Born and raised in Morocco, Eddaoudi's academic journey began at Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He then moved to France to pursue his master's and doctoral degrees at Denis Diderot University. Subsequently, Eddaoudi embarked on a successful academic career in the United States, where he held positions at several renowned universities and eventually became a full professor at the University of South Florida.

In 2009, Eddaoudi joined KAUST as a founding faculty member, and his exceptional contributions led to his promotion to distinguished professor in 2016. His remarkable achievements have not only brought recognition within the scientific community but have also solidified KAUST's position as a global leader in scientific excellence, particularly within the Arab world.

Expressing his gratitude upon receiving the Kuwait Prize, Eddaoudi said, "This award recognizes not just me, but the many people who mentored me and the many people who have come through my lab and achieved excellent science." His words reflect the collaborative spirit that drives scientific progress, acknowledging the collective efforts of his mentors, colleagues, and students.

KAUST Vice President of Research, Pierre Magistretti, praised Eddaoudi's accomplishment, stating, "We are extremely proud of his hard work. This prize not only exemplifies the great work by Professor Eddaoudi, but it is also a testament to KAUST's global position in science and its reputation for excellence within the Arab world." Magistretti's remarks underscore the institution's commitment to fostering a culture of scientific excellence and advancing the frontiers of knowledge within the region.

Eddaoudi's remarkable journey, from his humble beginnings in Morocco to his current position as a distinguished professor at KAUST, serves as an inspiration to aspiring scientists worldwide. His dedication, innovative spirit, and collaborative approach have not only yielded transformative discoveries but have also paved the way for future generations of researchers to build upon his work.
