Missing Russian swimmer identified after body found in Istanbul
Turkish authorities have confirmed that a body recovered from the sea in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district belongs to a Russian swimmer who had been missing for several months. The identification brings closure to a case that began during a high-profile international sporting event in the city.
The deceased was identified as a participant in the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race, who disappeared in late summer 2025 while taking part in the competition. The body was found along the shoreline in the Kuruçeşme area and was later transferred to Istanbul’s forensic facilities for detailed examination.
According to officials, the identification was confirmed through DNA analysis conducted with samples provided by the swimmer’s parents, who traveled from Russia to Turkey to assist authorities. Police accompanied them during the formal procedures.
After the completion of legal and medical formalities, the body is expected to be released to the family. The case has drawn attention to safety concerns surrounding open-water sporting events in challenging maritime conditions.
