Merz hosts Zelenskiy in Berlin for key talks on Ukraine
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Berlin for high-level discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing ongoing security challenges.
The meeting forms part of broader intergovernmental consultations between Germany and Ukraine, as both nations continue to coordinate closely in response to the conflict triggered by Russia’s invasion in 2022.
Germany has emerged as one of Ukraine’s most significant allies within Europe, providing extensive military and financial support. Since the start of the full-scale war, Berlin has committed tens of billions of euros in aid, making it the largest European contributor to Kyiv’s defense efforts.
In its 2026 national budget, Germany allocated an additional €11.5 billion to support Ukraine, underscoring its long-term commitment to the country’s stability and sovereignty. This assistance includes military equipment, humanitarian aid, and economic support.
The talks in Berlin are expected to focus on continued defense cooperation, reconstruction planning, and diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict. Both leaders are also likely to discuss broader European security concerns and the implications of the war for regional stability.
Analysts view the meeting as a sign of sustained Western unity in backing Ukraine, as well as Germany’s growing leadership role in European security policy.
