Main road in Tripoli briefly blocked by scrap dealers' protest
In northern Lebanon, the main road in Tripoli was briefly blocked on Friday, August 2, by protesting scrap dealers who set tires on fire, releasing thick black smoke across the city. The demonstration disrupted traffic flow in the downtown area and surrounding districts.
The protest was triggered after the Internal Security Forces (ISF) shut down a scrap metal yard in the Saki el-Tebbané area. Authorities had previously issued a deadline for business owners to legalize their operations, which expired without compliance.
As smoke blanketed the skies and vehicles came to a standstill, Lebanese Army units intervened to reopen the road. Gradually, traffic resumed, and the situation in Tripoli began to normalize.
The incident highlights the tensions surrounding informal businesses in the region and the government’s increasing efforts to regulate them.
