Madagascar's Legislative Elections: Presidential Coalition Secures Absolute Majority (Constitutional Court)

In a resounding victory, Madagascar's presidential coalition "IRMAR" has swept the legislative elections, garnering an absolute majority in the National Assembly. According to the official results announced on Thursday by the High Constitutional Court, the coalition secured 84 out of the 163 contested seats.

Mirroring their 2019 performance, the presidential coalition once again clinched 84 seats, while independent candidates secured 50 seats. The main opposition platform, Firaisankina, obtained 22 seats in the parliament.

The Firaisankina coalition comprises political formations led by former presidential candidates Marc Ravalomanana, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, August Paraina, Jean Brunelle Razafitsiandraofa, and Hery Rajaonarimampianina.

Additionally, the party "Kolekitifan'ny Malagasy" secured one seat, the Green party obtained one seat, FIVOI secured four seats, and GPJM garnered one seat.

After the High Constitutional Court's review of petitions, four independent candidates initially declared winners by the Electoral Commission were ultimately not proclaimed victorious.

Over 11 million Malagasy citizens cast their votes on May 29 to elect the 163 deputies of the National Assembly.

For President Andry Rajoelina, who was elected just six months ago to lead the country, the stakes were high. Securing a clear majority will enable him to govern unimpeded over the next five years.

The presidential coalition's resounding triumph in the legislative elections heralds a new era of stability and governance in Madagascar's political landscape. As the nation looks forward, the coalition's absolute majority paves the way for the implementation of President Rajoelina's agenda and the pursuit of policies aimed at fostering national development and progress.
