MP Mike Amesbury Faces Assault Charge Following Alleged Street Incident

MP Mike Amesbury has been charged with common assault following an incident that reportedly involved him striking a man in the street. A video surfaced allegedly showing the 55-year-old, who has since been suspended from the Labour Party, punching a 45-year-old man to the ground in Frodsham, Cheshire, shortly after 2:45 a.m. on 26 October.

The Runcorn and Helsby representative is set to appear in court, although the date and location for this hearing have yet to be confirmed. Amesbury expressed his regret over the situation, acknowledging the court summons and stating that he is fully cooperating with police. However, he refrained from further comment, citing the ongoing nature of the case.

Following reports of the incident on Main Street in Frodsham, Amesbury volunteered for a police interview under caution. Cheshire Police subsequently conducted an investigation, and the case file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on 29 October for review. Rosemary Ainslie of the CPS urged restraint in public commentary or online speculation to ensure the integrity of the proceedings, emphasizing the defendant’s right to a fair trial.

Amesbury, who won his parliamentary seat with a majority of 14,696 votes, has represented his Cheshire constituency since 2017 and served as a shadow minister from 2018 until his recent suspension.
