Japan reaffirms commitment to stable relations with China amid regional tensions
Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stable and constructive relations with China despite growing political and military tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stated that Tokyo remains dedicated to pursuing a mutually beneficial relationship with Beijing based on common strategic interests and regional stability. His remarks come at a time when relations between the two neighboring countries are facing increasing strain over security and defense issues.
Tensions intensified following comments made last year by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding the possibility of a Chinese military operation against Taiwan. Tokyo suggested that such a scenario could directly threaten Japan’s security and potentially justify the use of collective self-defense measures.
Beijing strongly opposed those remarks and has repeatedly criticized Japan’s recent military reforms. Chinese officials argue that Tokyo is moving away from its traditionally pacifist postwar defense policy and increasing regional instability through military expansion.
Last month, Japan introduced major changes to its security policy by easing restrictions on military equipment exports. The move allows the country to expand its defense industry and potentially export lethal weapons, marking a historic shift in Japan’s postwar military strategy.
In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged Japan to stop what Beijing described as “reckless remilitarization” and called on Tokyo to return to peaceful regional cooperation and good-neighbor relations.
The situation reflects broader geopolitical tensions in East Asia, where disputes involving Taiwan, military modernization, and regional alliances continue to shape diplomatic relations between major powers.
