Irish AI minister raises concerns over X’s Grok tool

Ireland’s Minister for Artificial Intelligence has expressed concerns about Grok, the artificial intelligence tool developed by the US social media platform X, following discussions with company executives about online safety and content moderation.

Minister Niamh Smyth acknowledged that X has introduced corrective measures after controversy erupted over features that enabled the digital alteration of images, including the removal of clothing without consent. According to the company, Grok has now been restricted from generating or modifying images that involve undressing individuals.

X also confirmed that it will apply geoblocking measures to prevent users from creating images of people wearing bikinis, underwear, or similar attire in countries where such content is considered illegal. These steps were taken in response to public backlash and growing regulatory pressure.

During the meeting, Smyth voiced strong concern about the circulation of non-consensual intimate imagery and child sexual abuse material on the platform. She stressed that technological safeguards must be as advanced as the systems they are designed to regulate.

Despite welcoming recent actions, the minister noted that unresolved issues remain, particularly regarding Grok’s use as a standalone application. She said the Irish government will continue to assess the tool and maintain close oversight.

Smyth added that further engagement with X is planned to ensure long-term protections and compliance with Irish and European digital safety standards.
