Iran: Police announce major arrests amid ongoing protests

Iranian police have announced what they described as “major arrests” targeting key figures linked to the protest movement that has shaken the country for the past two weeks. The demonstrations, largely driven by rising living costs and economic pressure, have taken place in several cities, including the capital, Tehran.

Speaking on state television, national police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan said that significant arrests were carried out on Saturday night against individuals accused of playing a leading role in the unrest. He stated that those detained would face legal consequences following the completion of judicial procedures, without providing further details on the number or identities of those arrested.

The protests have been marked by sporadic clashes and increased security measures, as authorities seek to contain the movement. Images and reports circulated by state-affiliated media have shown police deployments in sensitive areas, while officials continue to frame the demonstrations as riots orchestrated by disruptive elements.

The government has repeatedly emphasized its determination to restore order, while critics argue that economic hardship and public dissatisfaction remain at the core of the unrest. Tensions remain high as security forces maintain a strong presence and the situation continues to evolve.
