International Pressure Intensifies as Venezuela's Machado Demands Maduro’s Departure

Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado has renewed her call for heightened international intervention to compel President Nicolás Maduro to step down by January.

In a statement made on Thursday from an undisclosed location within Venezuela, Machado urged global leaders to promptly recognize her faction's candidate as the rightful winner of the July election and to enforce accountability measures against government officials responsible for post-election abuses.

Machado’s plea follows the recent issuance of an arrest warrant for Edmundo González, a former diplomat who represented the main opposition coalition during the July 28 election. The National Electoral Council, aligned with Maduro’s government, declared Maduro the victor but has yet to substantiate its claim with vote tallies. Conversely, the opposition asserts that González secured a decisive victory over Maduro, supported by vote tallies from over 80% of the electronic voting machines used in the election.

Protests erupted across Venezuela in response to the electoral council’s announcement. While largely peaceful, the demonstrations involved acts of civil disobedience, including the toppling of statues, clashes with law enforcement, and the destruction of government property.

In reaction to the unrest, Maduro’s government has been accused of severe human rights violations. Human Rights Watch has reported that state security forces and affiliated gangs were involved in some of the 24 fatalities during the protests.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby condemned the arrest warrant for González as a further example of Maduro’s efforts to cling to power through coercion. He indicated that the U.S. is evaluating measures to demonstrate to Maduro’s regime that its actions will have repercussions.

Under the Biden administration, Venezuela had seen some easing of economic sanctions, but this relief was reversed earlier this year in response to increased government repression. Attorney General Tarek William Saab defended the arrest warrant, asserting that González’s failure to respond to inquiries and the publication of vote tallies online amounted to a usurpation of the National Electoral Council’s authority. Saab criticized the opposition’s records as false, a claim disputed by UN experts and the Carter Center, which observed the election but did not endorse the opposition’s victory.

The ongoing political turmoil underscores the urgent need for international engagement to address Venezuela’s deepening crisis and ensure a transition towards democratic governance.
