Indonesia tightens cryptocurrency promotion rules for social media influencers

Indonesia has introduced stricter regulations governing the promotion of cryptocurrencies and other digital financial assets, requiring social media influencers to obtain professional certification before advertising or recommending such products to the public.

The new regulatory framework is part of a broader effort to strengthen investor protection and improve oversight of digital asset marketing. Authorities aim to reduce the risks associated with unverified investment advice and misleading promotional campaigns that have become increasingly common on social media platforms.

Under the updated rules, individuals who provide recommendations, endorsements, or promotional content related to cryptocurrencies and digital assets must demonstrate professional competence through recognized certification programs unless they already hold an official financial services license.

The regulations also limit promotional activities to digital assets that are listed on licensed trading platforms operating under the supervision of Indonesian regulators. This measure is intended to reduce exposure to unregulated projects and highly speculative investments that may pose significant risks to investors.

In addition, companies involved in digital asset services must ensure that all participants appearing in marketing campaigns comply with relevant licensing and regulatory requirements. Financial institutions and regulated entities will be responsible for overseeing promotional materials and ensuring that advertisements meet legal and ethical standards.

Authorities have also encouraged firms to rely primarily on official communication channels when publishing marketing content. The objective is to improve transparency and reduce the likelihood of inaccurate or misleading information reaching potential investors.

The Indonesian initiative reflects a growing global trend toward tighter oversight of financial influencers, often referred to as "finfluencers." Regulators in several countries have expressed concern about the impact of online personalities on investment decisions, particularly in rapidly evolving markets such as cryptocurrencies and digital assets.

Financial experts believe the new framework could contribute to a more responsible digital investment environment by ensuring that promotional content is produced by individuals with appropriate knowledge and qualifications. Supporters argue that stronger standards may help build investor confidence and improve market integrity over the long term.

As the digital asset industry continues to expand worldwide, Indonesia's latest measures highlight the increasing importance of balancing innovation with consumer protection and regulatory accountability.
