Rabat transforms former bus station into a new digital library
A new digital library has been established in Rabat on the site of the city's former bus station at the entrance to El Kamra, marking a new use for a location that once served as a major urban transport point.
The facility is located near the popular Yacoub El Mansour district and is designed to provide residents with access to a range of digital cultural and educational resources.
Rather than focusing solely on traditional books, the new facility adopts a broader multimedia approach, reflecting the changing ways in which people access information and entertainment.
Books, videos, music and games
The digital library is expected to offer users access to a diverse selection of online content. Alongside digital reading materials, the platform will include videos, music and games.
The combination is intended to create a more versatile environment for users with different interests and age groups, while expanding access to cultural content through digital tools.
The project also includes a data-storage dimension. The facility is designed to function as a repository for documentary material and digital files, providing users with additional resources beyond conventional library collections.
A new role for the former El Kamra site
The choice of location gives the project an additional urban significance. The library occupies land previously used by the former bus station, transforming a site associated with transport infrastructure into a space dedicated to culture and digital access.
Its position at the entrance to El Kamra also places the facility close to a densely populated part of Rabat, potentially making digital resources more accessible to local residents.
The project illustrates how existing urban sites can be repurposed to accommodate new public services as cities evolve.
Green space surrounds the facility
The authorities have also redesigned the area surrounding the library, creating a large green space around the new infrastructure.
The landscaping is intended to make the site more welcoming and comfortable for visitors, adding a public-space component to the cultural project.
With its combination of digital resources and an improved outdoor environment, the facility represents an attempt to connect cultural access with the redevelopment of an urban site.
Rabat expands its digital cultural offer
The new library adds another dimension to Rabat's cultural infrastructure by placing digital access at the center of a public facility.
Its multimedia resources, documentary storage capacity and surrounding green space could give the former bus station site a new role within the city's cultural landscape, turning a previously utilitarian location into a destination for learning, entertainment and digital discovery.
