India: Military AN-32 Aircraft Crashes During Landing at Assam Airbase
A new aviation incident involving the Indian Air Force occurred on Saturday in northeastern India. A military transport aircraft of the AN-32 type crashed while completing its landing phase at Jorhat Air Force Base, located in the state of Assam.
Military authorities have confirmed the accident but did not immediately provide details regarding the occupants of the aircraft or potential casualties. An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
An Accident Within the Base
According to initial information available, the aircraft crashed within the confines of Jorhat Air Force Base during its final approach. Rescue and security operations were quickly deployed to the scene by military teams.
Images shared by several Indian media outlets show a significant release of black smoke visible from a distance, as well as debris scattered across an area of the base. Military personnel and specialized teams have been mobilized to secure the perimeter and assess the extent of the damage.
An Investigation to Determine the Causes of the Crash
In light of this accident, the Indian Air Force announced the establishment of an inquiry commission tasked with identifying the factors that led to the aircraft's crash.
The investigations will need to determine whether the incident is related to a technical issue, specific operational conditions, or other elements that occurred during the landing phase.
Authorities have not yet provided any additional details regarding the mission carried out by the aircraft prior to the accident.
An Essential Aircraft for Logistical Operations
The AN-32 plays a significant role in the transport capabilities of the Indian Air Force. Originally designed in the Soviet Union, this twin-engine aircraft is used for transporting material, supplying deployed units, and various logistical missions.
Its robustness allows it to operate in hard-to-reach areas, particularly in the mountainous and isolated regions of northern India. It thus plays a strategic role in supporting military forces deployed near the country's sensitive borders.
A Type of Aircraft Already Facing Past Accidents
The Jorhat accident revives memories of a tragedy that occurred in 2019 involving an aircraft of the same model. An AN-32 that was operating a flight between Jorhat and Mechuka, in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, crashed in a mountainous region near the Chinese border.
All thirteen people on board lost their lives in this catastrophe, which deeply affected the Indian armed forces.
The new accident raises questions about the safety and maintenance of a fleet that remains essential for the operational missions of the Indian Air Force, pending the official conclusions of the investigation.
