ILO Chief Commends Morocco's Progress Toward Social Justice

The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, has commended Morocco's steadfast commitment to social justice and inclusive growth during his visit to Rabat. His remarks at a press conference on Monday highlighted Morocco's significant achievements in building a comprehensive social welfare system and advancing labor rights.

Houngbo praised Morocco's efforts as a model for other nations striving to improve social welfare. "Our visit to Morocco underscores its pivotal role within the ILO," he said. "We are extremely pleased with the progress Morocco has made, especially in the context of fostering a social state."

In his address, Houngbo recognized Morocco's tangible steps toward social protection, universal welfare programs, and targeted assistance for disadvantaged communities. "Morocco's commitment to social protection and initiatives to uplift disadvantaged groups is evident in their policies," he remarked.

The ILO chief also acknowledged Morocco's successful efforts to raise the guaranteed minimum wage (SMIG) to "significant" levels, contributing to a more equitable labor market. He also praised the government's commitment to social dialogue, which culminated in a landmark agreement on April 29th. This agreement aligns with the ILO's focus on fostering social justice and worker rights.

Younes Sekkouri, the Minister of Economic Inclusion, emphasized the importance of Houngbo's visit, especially given recent agreements and initiatives to strengthen social welfare in Morocco. "Our government has made dedicated efforts to implement this Royal Vision with concrete results," Sekkouri stated, referring to the leadership of King Mohammed VI. Sekkouri described the Moroccan model as an example for other countries in the Global South and beyond. "Morocco's approach is exemplary on a global scale," he added. "The Kingdom's vision is leading us into a new era of the social state with great ambitions and, more importantly, notable achievements."

During his visit, Houngbo met with key government officials and participated in important events focusing on social justice and labor market dynamics. The ILO continues to advocate for workers' rights and equitable economic growth, and Morocco's efforts are a beacon of progress, showcasing how a nation can work to ensure that prosperity reaches all segments of society.
