Hollywood and Bollywood compete for Valentine’s Day moviegoers
Film fans planning a Valentine’s Day trip to the cinema have a wide range of options this weekend, as Hollywood and Bollywood release a mix of romantic dramas, action thrillers and survival stories starting February 13. Studios on both sides are betting that the holiday remains a strong draw for couples and general audiences seeking big-screen escapism.
Hollywood’s main Valentine’s Day offering is a new adaptation of “Wuthering Heights,” positioned by Warner Bros. as its flagship theatrical release for the period. Directed by Emerald Fennell, the gothic romance stars Oscar-nominated Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and BAFTA-nominated Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, reimagining Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel with a modern visual sensibility. Early reviews have been divided, with some critics praising the film’s stylistic confidence and others faulting it for lacking the emotional depth of the source material. The film currently holds a 70 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting the mixed critical response.
Warner Bros. secured the project after a competitive bidding process, paying an estimated $80 million for distribution rights. The decision followed Fennell and Robbie’s choice to reject a reported $150 million streaming offer from Netflix in favor of a nationwide theatrical release, underlining continued confidence in cinema-first launches for prestige titles tied to key calendar dates.
In India, Valentine’s Day brings a direct box-office clash between two Hindi-language releases targeting the same audience. Vishal Bhardwaj’s “O Romeo,” starring Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri, marks the director’s fourth collaboration with Kapoor after earlier acclaimed films. The story places a dark romance within the criminal underworld of 1990s Mumbai, with Kapoor portraying a character known as Haseen Ustara.
Competing for screens is “Tu Yaa Main,” a survival thriller directed by Bejoy Nambiar and featuring Shanaya Kapoor alongside Adarsh Gourav. The film follows two social media influencers whose romantic getaway in a jungle setting turns into a struggle to stay alive. The project is reported to draw inspiration from the 2018 Thai horror film “The Pool,” adapting its core survival premise for an Indian audience.
Alongside new releases, Indian cinema chains are also using the holiday period to reintroduce well-known romantic classics. “Devdas,” starring Shah Rukh Khan, returned to theaters on February 6, while “Love Story,” featuring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, and the Telugu romance “Ye Maaya Chesave” are scheduled for Valentine’s Day screenings.
The combination of high-profile premieres and nostalgic re-releases highlights the enduring appeal of Valentine’s Day as a strategic window for movie studios. Despite shifting viewing habits and competition from streaming platforms, the weekend continues to be seen as a reliable opportunity to attract audiences seeking romance, spectacle and shared theatrical experiences.
