Hakim Ziyech Faces $720,000 Tax Dispute in Turkey as Galatasaray Takes Responsibility
Moroccan footballer Hakim Ziyech is embroiled in a financial controversy in Turkey, with Turkish authorities revealing an unpaid tax debt of approximately $720,000. The issue stems from Ziyech’s tenure with Istanbul-based football club Galatasaray, which he left during the 2023–2024 winter transfer window.
Tax debt and penalties
According to Turkish outlet Milliyet, a public notice issued on June 28 disclosed that Ziyech owes $644,000 in main taxes and an additional $76,000 in late payment penalties. The debt pertains to his income earned while playing for Galatasaray. Attempts by the Istanbul Tax Office to deliver the notice directly to Ziyech were unsuccessful, as he was not found at his registered address. Consequently, the authorities published the notice online and in national newspapers. Under Turkish law, the notice will be deemed officially delivered if he does not respond within one month.
Galatasaray's net salary contract
Galatasaray officials clarified that Ziyech’s contract was based on a “net salary” agreement, meaning the club, through its corporate branch Galatasaray Sportif AŞ, is legally obligated to cover his tax liabilities. This agreement shifts the financial burden from Ziyech to the club, which is now expected to address the debt.
Ziyech's turbulent Galatasaray tenure
Ziyech’s time at Galatasaray was marked by injuries and limited appearances, leading to his departure after just a few months. Despite moving on from the Turkish league, unresolved financial issues have followed him, adding another layer of complexity to his career.
The footballer, known for his previous success with Chelsea and his contributions to Morocco’s national team, now faces legal and financial challenges that could impact his future endeavors.
