Giant 11,000-carat ruby discovered in Myanmar
A massive ruby weighing approximately 11,000 carats has been discovered in Myanmar, attracting international attention in the gemstone industry. Authorities described the stone as exceptionally rare due to its impressive size, color quality, and clarity.
The ruby was reportedly extracted from the famous Mogok Valley, a region globally recognized for producing some of the finest gemstones in the world. Mogok is especially known for its highly prized “pigeon blood” rubies, valued for their deep red color and brilliance.
According to official statements, the newly discovered gem displays a red-purple color with slight yellowish tones and possesses what experts consider a high chromatic quality. Specialists believe the stone could become one of the most remarkable gemstone discoveries in recent years.
Although smaller than another ruby of more than 21,000 carats found in the same region in 1996, authorities say the newly discovered stone may hold greater value because of its superior transparency, color intensity, and overall quality.
Rubies from Myanmar are among the most expensive precious stones in the international market. Exceptional specimens can reach prices of several million dollars at auctions and among private collectors.
For centuries, rulers, merchants, and gem traders competed for control of the Mogok region because of its rich deposits of precious stones. The area remains one of the world’s most important sources of high-quality rubies and sapphires.
The discovery comes at a politically sensitive period for Myanmar, a country that has faced instability and conflict since the military takeover in 2021. Despite ongoing tensions, the gemstone sector continues to play a major role in the national economy and international trade.
