Germany and Brazil call for stronger European-Brazilian cooperation
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between Europe and Brazil during a high-level meeting held at a major international industrial fair in Hanover.
The two leaders highlighted the growing strategic partnership between the European Union and Brazil, South America’s largest economy. Their discussions underscored the shared commitment to multilateral cooperation and the development of a rules-based global economic system.
Both sides welcomed the implementation of the long-anticipated trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, set to take effect on May 1. The deal is expected to reduce trade barriers, facilitate investment, and deepen economic integration between the two regions.
Speaking at the event, Merz stressed the importance of open markets and reduced tariffs, describing the agreement as a step toward more balanced and cooperative global trade. He reiterated Europe’s commitment to strengthening partnerships based on shared economic principles.
For his part, Lula presented Brazil as a reliable and strategic partner, particularly in the supply of critical raw materials. He pointed to the country’s vast natural resources, including significant reserves of minerals essential for modern industries and energy transitions.
The Brazilian leader also called for greater technology transfer and increased local processing capacity, arguing that natural resources should contribute more directly to national economic growth and social development.
The meeting reflects a broader effort by both sides to deepen cooperation in areas such as industry, sustainability, and innovation, at a time when global supply chains and economic alliances are undergoing significant transformation.
