In a troubling development, approximately 60 high school students from a school in Casablanca's Mohammadi neighborhood were swiftly transported to the emergency department of the city's Mohammed V Hospital on Wednesday. These students were reported to have suffered severe suffocation, allegedly due to a gas leak originating from a nearby factory.

The incident occurred on the school premises, with students experiencing respiratory distress that necessitated immediate medical attention. Upon reaching the hospital's emergency ward, medical personnel promptly administered first aid. While some students were discharged earlier in the day, approximately 18 were retained for further observation and treatment.

According to reports, the affected students were admitted to the pediatric unit. Some were discharged, while the investigation into the cause of suffocation continues for others. Local residents have unanimously pointed to a neighboring nail manufacturing facility as the likely source of the gas leak that led to this tragic incident.

In an interview with a local newspaper, a parent confirmed that their daughter, who was among those transported to the emergency department, had detected a strong gas odor several days prior to the incident. The parent further disclosed that their minor daughter is currently experiencing respiratory difficulties. They also notified the school administration of the gas odor, urging them to take appropriate measures before the situation escalated.

As the investigation progresses, concerns grow regarding the potential health impacts on the affected students and the wider community. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry to pinpoint the exact cause of the gas leak and ensure the implementation of suitable measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This incident underscores the critical importance of maintaining stringent safety protocols in industrial facilities and fostering open communication between schools, parents, and authorities. Such measures are essential for promptly addressing potential hazards and safeguarding the well-being of students and the broader community.
